Saturday 26th

 

Flo:

We woke up early today to a delish cooked breakfast and left for our tournament. We arrived with all the pitches set up already so we didn’t have to do too much. The clubs came and I reffed the last few games. Then at the end when all the awards had been given out I got interviewed for the Zambia News Broadcasting Corporation which was quite scary. We walked back to our hotel we got pancakes for lunch and exchanged our money, ready for the market tomorrow. At 3:30 we got a bus to the Zambezi river for the river cruise. We saw  crocodiles, quite a few hippos, a variety of birds and an elephant which was so cool. I’d never seen a crocodile and a hippo in the wild. The sunset was absolutely amazing and, especially with my friends. We had catered food and unlimited drinks!   

 

Hi It’s Phoebe! Today was the last day of tag rugby activities. We got up at around 6am to the loud noises of the town. Then I did a book club with Mr Burton for about 5 minutes until it went quickly off course. Then we had great porridge and toast for breakfast. After we all took some large duffel bags and walked about 10-15 minutes to the grounds of the tournament (first field with grass instead of sand that I recall on this trip). At the tournament as pitch manager I kept track of scores and sorted the teams playing etc. I spoke to new people which was refreshing and then we gave out donations and medals. At about half past one in the afternoon we then walked back and had amazing pancakes which were such a treat after lots of hard work and early mornings. At 3:30pm we left for a river cruise. I was particularly looking forward to this as it meant the beginning of being a tourist and enjoying seeing a new country for the rest of the trip! On the river cruise we saw hippos, were just a few metres from an alive wild crocodile and saw a myriad of birds and other parts of the undisturbed island. I fixed someone’s camera resolution and I learnt how to play go fish. Then after the sun had set we came back and I had some cereal and wrote the blog. P.S we used playing cards A LOT!

    How wonderful to be able to enjoy the amazing wildlife and nature as a “tourist” now & see the animals in their natural habitat.You all deserve it, you worked very hard with early rises.👏👏
    Unlimited drinks on the “booze cruise”?? 😂😂… on the mighty Zambezi!

    Indeed scary to be interviewed by the local TV. I’d really like to see the interview! Good job Flo x

    What a lot of incredible things all in one day!
    So much wildlife you must have been in your element! I took some photos a dragonfly’s for you yesterday.
    Such a massive well done on everything……….we miss you so much and can’t wait to squeeze you!

 Flo's Entry: We woke up for breakfast at 8.30am and we left at 9am to go to the churches. The first one was not what I was expecting at all; we were greeted by a group of women and small children singing their local call and response songs. This experience made my face hurt because I couldn't stop smiling.  The whole scene was unreal and something I would never be able to experience again.  When we sat in the church, there was a whole range of aged children. They were so adorable and they kept waving back at us. We were invited to join in and dance to their songs. This made me realise how lucky I am to be on this trip as I can imagine that if I didn't come, I would have seriously bad FOMO (fear of missing out).  Then we drove to the next location. Finn: Day three has been a tiring yet brilliant journey around northern Lusaka! We were up at the crack of dawn to visit some very deprived schools around the outskirts of Lusaka. The children were very excited to see us and welcomed us with lots of singing and dancing. We spent lots of time chatting to the kids who had plenty of questions for us too. A lot of the younger children were especially keen to jump on us which was a lot of fun. At least twice I ended up at the bottom of a pile of hysterical kids who were obsessed with feeling my hair which must look alien to them. Peble was the first school we visited who gave us a very inclusive welcome to their school. They took us on a tour which was comprised of five or six, small and poorly equipped classrooms. Despite this they were in very high spirits. I made friends which a young boy called Alfred who introduced me to his classmates and showed me around.
